Heat pump systems will run well once installed, but here are a few tips to maximize efficiency:
1. Set it and forget it. We are used to turning off the lights and heat when we leave the house or go to sleep, but heat pumps work better when they are running continuously. Consider only turning back your heat pump's output when leaving the house for several days.
2. Use your backup system. Depending on the weather, it may be more efficient to use a backup heating system during the coldest parts of the year when heat pumps are least efficient.
3. Keep your system well-maintained. Proper maintenance includes cleaning indoor dust filters, keeping outdoor units clear of snow/ice, and possibly getting annual maintenance.
4. Improve the efficiency of your home by insulating it well and air sealing it for thermal tightness.
