Solar electric systems, also known as solar photovoltaic or solar PV, converts sunlight into electrical energy through an array of solar panels that connect to the regional electrical grid via a building’s electrical system. Unless a system includes batteries and a transfer switch, it is unable to operate during regional power outages. The Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC) has some useful background information on this here (https://www.masscec.com/how-it-works).
