Heat pump efficiency is described by Heating Seasonal Performance Factor HSPF, and by Coefficient of Performance COP. The COP of air source heat pumps is in the range of 2.2 to 3. That means that for every unit of electricity used, 2.2-3 units of heat are transferred into the home. By comparison, electric resistance heating has a COP of 1, and most fossil fuel systems have a COP of 0.8. The cooling efficiency of heat pumps is comparable to the most efficient traditional A/C units and much more efficient than window units. Geothermal heat pumps are even more efficient.
