Solar panels can be added to the roofs of houses that meet modern building codes without exceeding the strength of the roof. Some older houses built to earlier standards may require reinforcement from the inside to accept the weight of the solar panels in addition to normal snow and wind loads. An installer will be able to tell you whether reinforcement is necessary and what it will cost.
