Currently, the price of electricity in Massachusetts is higher than the price of natural gas. Fortunately, air sources heat pumps are about three times more efficient than gas furnaces, which means that it takes much less energy to generate one unit of heat (or to raise the temperature in your house by one degree). Despite the efficiency difference, the cost of heating your home with a heat pump can be about one third higher than with natural gas.
If you need to replace your current oil or propane heating system, you will likely save money on heating with a heat pump owing to the current high cost of these types of fuel.
If your house is heated with old-fashioned electric radiant baseboard heating it will be cheaper to use a heat pump owing to its superior efficiency.
