That’s a good question, and we are glad you are biking more for your errands and appointments! There used to be a map available. However, the City has been adding bike racks at a rapid pace, trying to keep up with the growing demand. Also, private businesses are seeing the value of installing bike racks outside their stores, and as a result they’re installing them too. As a result, it’s been impossible to map all these new bike racks and, if you look around, it’s easier and easier to find one on site or close by.
If a bike rack is not available, bikes should not be locked or left in a way to impede pedestrians. Some other good rules of thumb are to stay away from fences, as they are frequently private property. Also, avoid locking your bike to a tree trunk, especially a young one, as its bark can easily be damaged and the tree become infected. When locking your bike to a metal pole, the taller the pole the better; even a chained bike can be lifted over a parking meter pole.
